Gippsland and Murray Basin Fiber Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing Data

This dataset contains both raw and processed data files.

The data consists of temperature-depth profiles collected from boreholes using an AP Sensing N4386B and Silixa XT-DTS Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) instruments.

The purpose of this data collection was to conduct a comparative study between DTS and conventional thermistor-based wireline logging methods. This comparison aimed to evaluate if DTS could serve as a viable alternative or complementary approach to conventional techniques in measuring borehole temperatures.

The study was conducted as part of a master’s project, focusing on maximising the amount of data captured with DTS to compare its precision, accuracy, efficiency, and ease of deployment compared to the conventional method.

Statement
The data was collected using an AP Sensing N4386B Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) instrument. The calibration process involved using a manufactured calibrated reference thermometer in a calibration bath on the surface. A section of the DTS cable was coiled within this bath, allowing for direct comparison between the DTS readings and the reference thermometer to correct any temperature offsets. This process was monitored continuously during data acquisition. Data collection covered the full depth of the borehole, except in parts where damage to the fibre optic cable resulted in unreliable readings, necessitating the exclusion of these noisy sections. The raw data collected underwent post-field calibration. This step involved using a calibrated reference thermometer in a calibration bath to correct any offset temperatures. Data was collected at random intervals, primarily between 1 to 5 minutes, to facilitate data stacking and noise reduction. DTS spatial resolution was set at 1 metre, with intervals of 0.2 metres.
